Karen Margoth Gómez is a second-semester law student at the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala. She has a background in sworn translation and English-Spanish interpreting, which has enabled her to develop skills in communication, analysis, and the understanding of diverse contexts. Additionally, she has complemented her academic training through various diploma courses and legal training programs offered by the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala and other organizations.
Her academic and social background is linked to her deep commitment to strengthening the rule of law, access to justice, human rights, gender equity, and civic participation. She has participated in various volunteer activities, workshops, and training programs focused on promoting and defending human rights, women’s rights, youth leadership, and peacebuilding. She has also been involved in initiatives aimed at boosting the participation of women and young people in public life and decision-making spaces—including Tik Naoj, an organization in her community, as well as processes and initiatives linked to AGLOJOVEN and REDINJOL.
She has promoted and fostered awareness regarding human rights and women’s rights. This commitment stems largely from the situations of vulnerability and inequality faced by many women in their communities, as well as the barriers that hinder knowledge of and the effective exercise of their rights. Given this context, she actively engages in workshops, training activities, and participatory forums that help strengthen people’s capabilities, particularly those of individuals in vulnerable situations. For her, community work and human rights education are essential tools for raising awareness, promoting women’s autonomy, and building environments that are more just, safe, and inclusive. These experiences have helped broaden her perspective on the needs and the social and political challenges facing Guatemala. She maintains a keen interest in legal and social research, public policy, democracy, and the strengthening of civic participation in Guatemala. Although I am just starting out, I aspire to continue enhancing my academic, professional, and social capabilities in order to contribute to processes of transformation within vulnerable sectors.
